The WOW Factor of World of Warcraft

What is World of Warcraft or WOW as most players like to call it? WOW is an online game formally called MMORPG which is short for massively multiplayer role- playing game.

How Did It Come About

Blizzard Entertainment developed an adventure game called Warcraft roughly 12 years ago. It could be played via a single player or with several players. Popularity for the game grew so much that they ended up adding two more games, and now World of Warcraft is the fourth in the series. It is reported as of March 2007 that there are 8.5 million active members who pay a monthly subscription fee of about $17 USD a month to play World of Warcraft. This works out to be over 144 million dollars a month in subscriptions, not a bad monthly figure.

How World of Warcraft Works

The World of Warcraft game is set in a virtual game world which is called World of Azeroth. The whole storyline is fantasy-driven and there are many exciting and colorful characters in the game. To play Worldof Warcraft you get to choose a character from a selection of races. Once you choice your race from a selection ranging from elfs, orcs, dwarfs, trolls, humans etc you then have to pick a profession. Professions range from hunter, warrior, rogue, shaman to a variety of others. The object of the game is to go from Level 1 to level 60 accumulating and gathering weapons and armor while having loads of adventure in the process. Throughout the game you will come across other friendly and hostile non-playing characters and there will be other characters who will assign you various quests, and of course with any level type adventure game there are the enemies that you have to defeat and slay to go to the next level.

World Of Warcraft Gameplay

Currently World of Warcraft is ranked number one MMORPG game in the world. It is voted the best as it features two main game play varieties. The first variety is player against player. This is played only in particular areas which are usually level specific and this is where players can fight against other players in the game. An example of this would be an area set outside for players in level 10 to 20. Any player on a higher or lower level would not be able to enter this area. The second variety is player against environment. This is where a player adventures in order go up higher levels. They will come across enemies that are game-generated and they will also come up against other players who are against his race he chose when he started the game.

The Not so Good

Like most things there are those players who want to misuse the game - There have been two cases so far, the first was a transgender player who formed a transgender guild and as a result Blizzard Entertainment banned the practice. This resulted in needless controversy between people for and against who voiced their protest. In 2005, a child died as a result of having a World of Warcraft addiction. It is reported by one leading psychologist that around 40% of people who play WOW are actually addicted to it.

We all have our views and beliefs on subjects but one thing that cannot be denied is that World of Warcraft is growing in popularity on a daily basis.
